The Sandyman Can

Definantly a weird story. It begins with the main character Nathanael talking about an experiance he had during his childhood. His mother had often gotten him to go to bed by warning him of the Sandman, a monster who scares children that don't go to bed. This idea evolves in his mind and one night he hears the sandman go into his father's room. In order to see what is going on, Nathanael hides in his father's bedroom a few days later. An associate of his father enters who Nate imagines is the horrible Sandman. A disturbing scene follows, one that has serious reprocussions on the entirety of Nate's life. He makes referances to clouds quite often. On the first page he talks about 'dark forebearings spreading themselves over my head like black clouds, impenetrable to every friendly ray of sunlight.' I feel he is eluding to his unconcious; some great and powerful formless entity that is influencing his entire life. The story just gets stranger and stranger even when you think it had reached its limit. Hopefully there will be a deeper explanation in class.

  1. Clara pretty much explains things to Nathaniel that way---its all in your head. But the story doesn't let us rest with that explanation because it doesn't give us ample means to write everything weird off as just Nathaniel's madness. Some of the strange stuff actually happens...
