Nathaniel sees his father as dominant figure. During the struggle between his father and Coppelius, he associates the two together. The father dies. Coppleius now takes over as "father figure" in the Oediupus Complex so nathaniel now sees Coppelius as habing the power- the power to castrate hin- take his eyes/power/identity- so now he fears Coppelius the whole rest of the story.
Nathaniel applies transference of the father onto Coppelius as the father figure- why coppola is seen by nathaniel as uncanny. brings back repressed oedipus complex from adolesence (repression=source of the uncanny)

I think you've got a good grasp on where Freud is going to go with this...what is even more interesting than the remarks F makes on the plot is the story's structure itself: which has implications for the reader as well as the characters...
