Fun Home

I found it pretty interesting how Bechdel was able to relate her parents lives and their relationship with different literary works that they were interested in and involved with throughout different stages of their lives. The parallel between literature and the reader's life is often very uncanny.

Also, Bechdel and her father parallel each other in numerous ways.  On the one hand, they are very much alike (interests in literature, homosexuality, crappy childhood). On the other hand, they are very much not alike. They are complementary to one another. Alison and her father portray the characteristics the other one should be but isnt (according to society)

  1. One of the things I want to talk about with this book is the way in which the story is mediated by/told through a wealth of literary references. This is because both of the Bechdel parents were cultured readers. But its also because both of the parents were cultural "failures:" both of them failing to have the kind of bohemian or creative life they initially wanted.
